Male Reproductive Anatomy Flashcards
Male reproductive system function
Produce sperm
Transport sperm to fertilization site (female productive tract) so fertilization can occur
Secrete hormones vital to maintain sexual characteristics
Testes (orch/o,orchi/o, orchid/o, test/o)
Located in the scrotum
Produce sperm
secrete testosterone
Epididymis (epididym/o)
Located on top of the testes
Stores sperm before ejaculation
Vas deferens (vas/o)
Transports sperm from epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Seminal vesicle
Helps produce a large portion of semen
Joins with vas defers to form the ejaculatory duct
Ejaculatory duct
Transports semen to urethra where semen is expelled from the body
Prostate gland ( prostat/o)
Glandular structure beneath the urinary bladder and surrounding the urethra
Produces a fluid that promotes sperm motility
Muscular tissue of prostate aids in expulsion of sperm during ejaculation
Prostate gland ( prostate/o)
Glandular structure beneath the urinary bladder and surrounding the urethra
Produces a fluid that promotes sperm motility
Muscular tissue if prostate aids in the expulsion of sperm during ejaculation
Bulbourethral glands ( Cowper glands)
Located below prostate
Secrete thick mucus that acts as a lubricant
Penis ( balan/o)
Composed of erectile tissue that surrounds urethra
During sexual activity becomes erect and semen is expelled through the ejaculatory duct through the urethra
