Male Reproduction Flashcards
What regulates male reproduction?
Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Testicular Axis
What the primary sexy organs?
Testes (Gonads)
What do testes do?
Produce sperm and sex steroid hormones
Where are the testes located?
External scrotum
What is the optimal temperature for the testes?
3 degrees C lower tha core body temperature
What are the secondary sex organs?
Penis (copulation), Duct system (sperm delivery to exterior), and accessory glands (produce semen)
What makes up the duct system?
Epididymis, Ductus Deferens, Ejaculatory Duct, Urethra
What makes up the accessory glands?
Seminal vesicles, Prostate, Bulbourethral glands
Where is sperm produced?
Seminiferous tubules
How is mature sperm delivered?
Via vas deferens
What produces testosterone?
Interstitial (Leydig) cells
What is are the 5 functions of Sertoli Cells?
- Stimulate spermatogenesis
- Nourish developing sperm
- Provide blood-testis barrier
- Secrete luminal fluid with androgen binding protein
- Phagocytosis of dead or defective developing sperm
When does spermatogenesis being?
Puberty
What does spermatogenesis produce?
4 mature sperms for 1 primary spermatocyte
What is the human sperm life expectancy? Mouse? Horse?
24-48 hours; 6 hours; 144 hours
What is the function of Acrosome?
Releases enzymes (Hyaluronidase) to initiate fertilization
What is the effect of FSH on the testes?
Increase spermatogenesis in Sertoli cells
What is the effect of LH on testes?
Increase testosterone production by Leydig cells
Where is Gonadotropin releasing hormone produced?
Hypothalamus
What does Gonadotropin releasing hormone do?
- Stimulates LH and FSH production by pituitary and
2. Controls production of sperm and testosterone
Where is Follicle stimulating hormone produced?
Anterior Pituitary
What does FSH do?
Stimulates production of sperm (Sertoli Cells)
Where is Luteinizing hormone produced?
Anterior Pituitary
What does LH do?
Stimulates testosterone production by Leudig cells
