Male Reproduction Flashcards
Seminiferous tubule?
Coiled tubules packed into lobes of the testes that produce sperm.
Sertoli cells?
Nourish developing sperm
Intersticial cells?
Surround tubules and produce testosterone
Tubular epididymus?
Sperm mature and are stored here behind each teste
Vas deference?
Once sperm mature they are propelled here by muscle contraction.
Urethra?
Sperm moves from storage (vas deference) to urethra for ejaculation
Hypothalmus?
- Controls testes by secreting GnRH
GnRH?
- Triggers anterior pituitary to produce FsH and LH
3?
FSH released by anterior pituitary. Promotes spermatogenisis in seminiferous tubules
What happens when Inhibin / Sperm levels rise?
Hypothalmus and pituitary reduce release of GnRH and FSH which reduces sperm and inhibin.
What secretes nutrients for sperm at ejaculation?
Seminal Vessicles
What duct is leading from vas deference and carries semen to urethra?
Ejaculatory duct
What gland secretes alkaline fluid to help sperm and neutralize vagina acidity?
Prostate gland
What gland secretes mucus?
Cowpers gland / Bulbourethral gland
Function of an acrosome?
-Contains enzymes to help penetrate outer layer of egg
