Male Internal Genitalia Flashcards
Seminiferous Tubules
Structure: convoluted microscopic tubes
Located inside each testis
Function: production of sperm (spermatogenesis)
Testicles
Structure: twin egg shaped structure
Located inside each testis
Function: production of sperm (spermatogenesis)
Sperm
Structure: head: contains genetic information
Tail: mobility
Location: produced in seminiferous tubules in testis
Function: fertilization of ovum
*each man produces about 100 million sperm per day
Interstitial cells
Located between seminiferous tubes in testis
Function/ create sex hormones
Epididymis
Structure: convoluted tube
Location: one on each testicle
Function: site of sperm maturation and storage
Vas Deferens (Vas)
Tube
Located in between the epididymis and the ejaculatory duct
Function: transport and storage of mature sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Ejaculatory Duct
Structure: formed by the junction of the vas and the duct of the seminal vesicles
Function: empties into urethra within the prostate
Prostate gland
Structure: single gland slightly larger than a walnut
Located at the base of the bladder that surrounds the urethra
Function: prostate secretions ( a cloudy alkine fluid) are a major component of semen
Seminal Vesicles
Two glands
Situated to either side if the prostate (located behind the bladder(
Function: not storage areas for sperm add their own secretions to semen
Bulbourethral Glands & pre-cum (chowper’s glands)
Two pea sized glands
Located near the root if the penis ( below the prostate gland)
Function: their secretions (often called pre-cum) are excreted prior to ejaculation
