MALE GENITAL SYSTEM Flashcards
define testes compared to ovaries
smoother and more compact
usually paired
what animals dont have a paired testes
some teleosts and cyclostomes
how are testes attached to body wall
using mesentary called mesorchium
cf mesovarium
what does scrotal sac do
the testes descend into this sac and it remains connectd to the coelom via the inguinal camal
keeps balls cool
what are the main genital ducts
the vas deferens which comes from the archinephric duct if it no longer produces urine
what happ to the anterior part of the vas deferens
it becomes the epidymus which is specialized for sperm storage
what does the male genital system look like for cyclostomes
single median testes
have no genital ducts and sperm is released directly into the coelom, exits from the cloaca or the papilla protruding from the cloaca
archinephric duct drains urine from the mesonephric or opisthonephric
what does male genital system look like for chondricthyans
have rudimentary mullerian ducts (oviducts)
short uriniferous tubules of pronephros combne with the epididymus and they join the testes to the archinephric duct
acessory urinary duct form for the opisthoneohric kidney
what does male genital system for bony fishes look like
the archinephric duct drains urine from the kidneys and may receive sperm from the testes
teleosts male genital system (bony fish)
have a seperate sperm duct - testiculuar duct and may exit body indpendantly from the archinephric
some teleosts release sperm directly into the coelom —> sperm exits through the genital pores
how does male genital work in lissamphibians
archinephric duct usually transports sperm but may still continue to do urine
testis may transfer sperm through archinephric ducts\ or through coopted pronephric tubules – or may form secondary ducts that pass around the pronephros
how does male genital system work for amniotes
archinephric duct is a vas def and does sperm only
mesonephric urinif tubule may contribute to epididymus
metephrenic kidney drained by ureter
amniote male acessory gland
glandular secretions are added t the sperm to make seminal fluid (semen)
in most amniotes, seminal vessicles are an expansion of posterior part of the vas def for semen storage
prostate and bulbourethral provide other secretions
external fertilization
aquatic only
male sheds sperm on the eggs on the outside of the body
can allow for mass fert
internal fertilization
male inserts append into female and allows formation of eggs or could be live births
