Malaria Revision Flashcards
1
Q
Causes(human)
A
- Houses close to breeding sites for example; padi fields.
- Human migration can allow the parasite to enter new areas.
- People provide the blood meal that the mosquitoes need.
2
Q
Causes (physical)
A
-Stagnant water(still) allows the mosquitos to lay their eggs.
- The female anopheles mosquito, is a vector.
- Mosquitoes thrive in tropical conditions with temperatures between 15-40 degrees Celsius
3
Q
Effects (adults and the country)
A
- if adults are too sick, they cannot work so they remain poor. They cannot buy enough food to eat.
- Companies like, Coca Cola are less likely to open factories in a country due to an unreliable work force.
- Tourists may not want to visit a country with malaria, so there are fewer tourism jobs and less money coming into the country.
4
Q
Effects (On Children)
A
- Children being off school and not learning can result in lower literacy rates.
- Malaria is worse in young children, which can lead to large numbers of children under the age of 5 dying.
5
Q
methods/control pt1
A
- Anti-malarial drugs can kill blood parasites, for example chloroquine.
- Draining all breeding areas like old tyres or buckets eradicates larvae.
- planting eucalyptus trees to soak up moisture removes breeding grounds.
- mustard seeds can be used to drag larvae below the surface of the water to drown them.
6
Q
methods/control pt2
A
- Small fish can be introduced to eat the larvae and can also provide a cheap protein source.
- Insecticides, such as malathion destroy female anopheles mosquito.
- Bed nets are cheap and effective at stopping mosquitoes from biting at night.
