Climate Change Flashcards

1
Q

What are the causes of climate change?

A
  • Sun spots are when the sun is cooler than normal so therefore it makes our climate cool.
  • Volcanic eruptions causes the dust and ash to cover sunlight which cools us.
  • The burning of fossil fuels in power stations produces carbon dioxide which leads to global warming.
  • Car exhausts produce nitrous oxide which increases the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
  • Increases in cattle farming contributes to atmosphere pollution by releasing the greenhouse gas methane.
  • CFCs that are found in aerosols and fridges contribute to global warming.

Q

What are the Effects of Climate change?

A

• Rising sea levels will destroy people’s homes and farmland due to flooding.

• Climate Change will create more extreme weather. hurricanes could become more frequent and more intense.

• There could be an increase risk of forest fires due to changes in surface temperatures and rainfall patterns.

• Precipitation is likely to increase everywhere, particularly in winter in northern areas such as Scotland.

• Most disease carrying insects prefer warm wet conditions. if the climate in the Uk continues to warm, it may become easier for mosquitoes to breed meaning an increase in the number of people at risk of malaria.

• Heatwaves in the summer could become more common, and more dangerous to vulnerable groups like the elderly.

Q

How to Manage Climate Change.

A

• use public transport or cycle because it helps lower pollution.

• Shops are charging at least 10p for plastic carrier bags to minimise waste.

• Having an electric car can prevent nitrous oxide getting released into the atmosphere.

• Using renewable energy sources like solar energy reduces the reliance on a usage of fossil fuels.

• Having recycling bins means there is less waste being sent to landfill sites, reducing the amount of methane being released into the atmosphere.

• use metal water bottles instead of plastic bottles as they are better for the environment.

•many people in scotland are putting insulation into their homes to help reduce levels of greenhouse gases.
