Q

What pathophysiology leads to end organ damage in malaria infection?

A

Increased expression of adhesion molecules on the surface of RBCs leads to sequestration and blocking of post capillary venules. This causes backup of blood and tissue hypoxia.

Q

Blood smear shows Schuffner’s dots and enlarged RBCs. What species might this be (2)?

A

Vivax or ovale

17
Q

How can one differentiate between vivax and ovale?

A

Vivax will have 12 - 24 merozoites

Ovale will have 6 - 12 merozoites

18
Q

What species will show a band form?

A

malariae
