Malaria drugs Flashcards
Chloroquine MOA and indication
moa: schizonticidal in blood…preventing polymerization of heme…buildup of free heme is toxic
indications: not falciparum…widespread resistance
Chloroquine AE
pruritis
Mefloquine MOA and indication
similar to chloroquine… buildup of free heme, shizonticidal in blood
indications: pro and treat all forms malaria
Mefloquine AE
neuropsychiatric: seizures/ psychosis
also arrhymias
Atovaquone MOA and indication
MOA: inhibit parasite mitochondrial transport (need to use with malarone/ proguanil to be effective)
Atovaquone AE
better then mefloquine ofr prophlyaxis…better tolerated
Doxycyline MOA and indication
tetracycline antibiotic…protein synthesis inhibition
indication: mefloquin resisitant P falciparum
Doxycycline AE
not in children or pregnant women
Quinine/ Quinidine MOA/ indication
naturally occurring alkaloid
DOC for treatment of seer falciparum…use with DOXY to shorten treatment
Quinine/ Quinidine AE
Cinchonism (headache, nausea, visual disturbance, dizziness, tinnitus)
quinine can be used in pregnancy
Primaquine MOA/ indication
MOA: probably heme buildup again
used to treat exoerythroytic (liver) forms of vivax and ovale…gametocidal
indication: Radical cure after chloroquine
Primaquine AE
GI, hematologyic, arryhtmias
contra: G6PD deficiency!
Artemisinin MOA/ indication
MOA: rapid acting schizonticid…producing free radicals in parasite food vacuole
indidcation: uncomplicated falciparum
3 main prophylaxis drugs
Mefloquine
Atovaquone + proguanil
Doxycycline
