Malaria Cycle Flashcards
Malaria cycle
Gametocytes –> sporozoites –> merozoites –> schizonts –> merozoites –> gametocytes
Gametocytes
When mosquito sucks blood with gametocytes, they pass into the salivary glands of mosquito where they develop into sporozoites
Sporozoites
Passed on to humans when mosquitos bite, travel with blood into liver cells where they divide to form thousands of merozoites
Merozoites
Released from the liver into the blood, where they enter the red blood cells, some of these form schizonts
Schizonts
Burst the red blood cells, releasing more merozoites, this is when fever attacks are seen
Merozoites part II
Some merozoites in the blood cells enter sexual reproduction and produce female gametocytes, transferred back into the mosquito when it bites
