malaria: challenges in managing Flashcards
1
Q
challenges in managing malaria?
A
- limitations of hc
- pop movement due to efficient transport and communications
- effects of climate change
- effects of monsoons
2
Q
limitations of hc
A
- malaria parasites have the ability to develop resistance to anti-malarial drugs due to incomplete treatment of an infected person
- during this, surviving parasites build resistance to drugs
3
Q
population movement due to more efficient transport and communcations
A
- movement of people across borders for human activities can spread and transmit diseases to new locations
- malaria control programmes become ineffective: harder to monitor movement of people
- volume and speed of movement increases and occurs at larger scale especially because of the ease of travelling with btr transport links between countries and efficiency of modern trans
- border control: controls flow of people, animals, goods across borders
- controls spread of drug- resistant malaria across borders cuz it is able to spread through uncontrolled migration and lack of coordination between countries along border districts
- malaria flourishes along internat borders, can be spread to low transmission areas
- travel advisories: inform travellers about risks of travelling = reduces travel to places with high risk of infections BUT may not be able to reach everyone: cannot reach ppl with no access to news or illiterate
4
Q
effects of climate change
A
- temperature and rainfall affect behaviour and range of mosquitoes
- increase in temp = breed and mature faster
- increase rain = more stag water
- greater frequency of malaria infection climate change
5
Q
effects of monsoons
A
- increases during monsoons due to high rainfall
- strong correlated with malaria cases
- more breeding sites, more transmissions
