MALARIA Flashcards
Describe the ABCD approach to prevention
A-Awareness of risk
B-Bite prevention
C-Check whether you need prevention tablets
D-Diagnosis
What is ‘casual prophylaxis’
targets liver stage, takes 7 days to develop continue for 7 days after leaving area
What is ‘suppressive prophylaxis’
erythrocytic stage continue for 4 weeks after
How does Malarone work
what is in it?
Atovaquone and proguanil prevents development of liver schizonts casual prophylactic works on erythrotic stage effective against falciparum and some vivax
How does mefloquine work?
what is in it
Lariam
suppressive prophylactic, effective against falciparum
not recommended if any CNS problems
How does doxycycline work?
Vibramycin D
prevents erythrotic stages, suppressive
100mg daily for 1-2 days before entering and 28 days after
What is black water syndrome
dark brown urine due to intravascular haemolysis, only falciparum, leads to acute renal failure.
DALY equations
DALY=YLL+YLD
YLL=NXL
YLD+IXDWXL
Describe the 3 stages of the malaria elimination strategy
1) aggressive control in heartland
2) progressive elimination from endemic margins
3) research to bring forward new tools
