Malaria Flashcards
Global prevalence and distribution
-children under 5 are most vulnerable
-sub-Saharan Africa was home to 93% of cases and 94% of deaths in 2018
-6 countries accounted for more than half of malaria cases world-wide in 2018
Links to physical environment
-mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and transmission is greatest in areas during and just after the rainy season, too much or little rain, transmissions fall
-require temps between 16oC and 32oC= tropics and sub-tropics
-locale scale= coastal areas are low-lying, less seasonal temps and high humidity
-climate change will alter the pattern
Links to socio-economic environment
-2/3 of the total global burden due to malaria is concentrated among the poorest 20% of the world’s pop
-due to=
1. poor housing
2. high density occupancy
3. unsanitary conditions
4. occupation
5. rural (more at risk)/ urban (higher rates)
6. age (under 5/ 5-14yrs)
Impacts on health and well-being
-kills a child every 2 mins
-many uncomfortable symptoms= fever, headache, fatigue, body aches
Impacts on economic well-being
-slows the economic growth and development, prolongs the cycle of poverty
-costs to individuals and families
-costs to government
Management and mitigation strategies
-vector control
-medicine (vaccines)
