-1950= China was poor and gov wanted to increase population
-1960= China experiencing famine and food shortages due to increasing population
-1970=gov feared the rapid growth would hinder economy
What when did the one child policy happen?
1979
What are the rule of the one child policy?
-limited to 1 child per married couples
-fined for having more than one child/ rewarded for only having one child
-men over 22, women over 20 to have a child
What are the consequences of the policy?
-aging population, growing in middle age/ elderly
-huge gender imbalance as men were more highly valued
-family size decreased so less family members to look after elderly
What are the environment/ economic impacts?
-30yrs= fast economic growth/ massive urbanisation
-massive expansion of cities, made policing of rule harder= 1-2million farmers moved into cities for work opportunities
What is the Iranian family plan programme?
-free to chose contraception method
-education on populated issues, even in more rural places
What was the environmental/ economic impact of the Iran family plan?
-improved living conditions= development of modern infrastructure
