Anopheles mosquito; mainly A. sinensis
How long can P. vivax stay dormant in the liver for?
P. vivax can stay dormant in the liver as hypnozoites and cause relapse of malaria months-years later
Which spp. of malaria is zoonotic & can be acquired locally?
P. knowlesi
What are the clinical presentations of malaria?
- Fever
- Chills
- Nausea & vomiting
- Anemia
- Jaundice
Which are the 2 malaria spp. we are most concerned with?
P. falciparum & P. vivax
How to identify P. falciparum in thin blood film?
- Multiple infections in single RBC
- Infected RBC is same size as uninfected cell
- Crescentic (sausage-shaped)
- Accole (pushed to the side)
How to identify P. vivax in thin blood film?
- Enlarged RBC
- Schuffner’s dots
How to identify P. knowlesi & P. malariae in thin blood film?
Band-like structure in RBC
How to identify P. ovale in thin blood film?
- Schuffner’s dots
- Oval
Which anti-malaria drug should be given for P. vivax and P. ovale?
Primaquine & chloroquine in combination
Primaquine is the only drug that kills dormant malaria
What group of individuals is primaquine contraindicated in?
G6PD deficiency or pregnant women
What type of cell does P. vivax infect?
Reticulocytes
What is the treatment for severe malaria?

- use with tetracycline/doxycyclin/clindamycin
How long is the incubation period for malaria?
7-10 days
What is the treatment for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria?
- Artesunate-Mefloquine
- Artemether-Lumefantrine
- Dihydroartemisin-Piperaquine
