Making water-insoluble inorganic salts Flashcards
1
Q
What does insoluble mean?
A
Can’t dissolve in a solvent (water)
2
Q
How would you prepare an impure insoluble salt?
A
Add equal volumes of the desire salt solutions in a beaker to form a precipitate of the insoluble salt and filter.
3
Q
What is a precipitate?
A
A solid formed out solution
4
Q
how would you purify an impure insoluble salt?
A
Wash the insoluble salt with cold deionised water and place in an over to dry (below the salts melting point) until it reaches a constant mass
5
Q
Why do we heat to a constant mass?
A
there is no more water to drive off the reaction
