Making Salts Flashcards
Do strong acids have a high or low concentration of H+ ions? What about strong alkalis?
Acids have a higher concentration of H+ ions. Strong alkalis have a high concentration of OH- ions (not H+ ions)
What pH are acids below?
7
What pH are alkalis above?
7
What pH is neutral?
7
What is the main factor that affects concentration?
The amount of dissolved solute particles in the solution, the more particles dissolved the higher the concentration
What is a base?
A substance that reacts with a substance to form a salt and water only
What is the general reaction between a metal oxide and an acid?
Metal oxide + acid → salt + water
What is the general reaction between a metal hydroxide and an acid?
Metal hydroxide + acid → salt + water
What is the general reaction between a metal carbonate and an acid?
Metal carbonate + acid → salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the general reaction between a metal and an acid?
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
Which salts are soluble?
- All common sodium, potassium and ammonium salts
- All nitrates
- Common chlorides
- Common sulfates
Which salts are insoluble?
- Common hydroxides
- Common carbonates
- Silver chloride
- Lead chloride
- Lead sulfate
- Barium sulfate
- Calcium sulfate
