Making salts Flashcards
What are the 3 different methods of making salts?
-Making an insoluble salt
-Mixing an acid and alkali to make soluble product
-Mixing a solid and an acid to form a soluble product.
How to make salt from mixing a solid and an acid?
-Pour 50cm3 of dilute acid into a beaker
-Warm the acid using a bunsen burner
-Add a small amount of base to warm acid and stir the mixture
-Add the base until it is in excess
-Filter the mixture
-Crystallise
How to make a salt from mixing acid with an alkali
-Use volumetric pipette to put 25cm3 alkali into flask
-Add a few drops of phenolphthalein
-Fill burette with acid
-Add acid to alkali whilst stirring
-Stop when colour change is colourless to pink.
How to make an insoluble salt from mixing two soluble products?
-Mix solutions
-Stir
-Filter out the solid precipitate that forms - keep the residue
-Wash with distilled water
-Dry solid between two pieces of filter paper
Describe the process of crystallisation
-Heat the filtrate until crystals begin to form on the glass rod
-Leave the solution to crystallise
-Filter out the crystals
-Leave to dry between two pieces of filter paper.
