Making Salts Flashcards
1
Q
Method for making soluble salts ( insoluble base method)
Doesn’t contain Na or Nh4 or K
A
- heat acid
- stir and add base until no more base will dissolve
- filter excess base
- heat salt solution until crystals begin to form
- allow solution to cool
- filter out crystals
- dry with a paper towel
2
Q
Making soluble salts ( titration method )
A
- perform titration to measure the volumes of acid and alkali neutralise eachother
- repeat titration but don’t put any indicator in to add exaclty right amount of volume
- heat salt solution until crystals start forming
- allow to cool
- filter crystals
- dry with paper towel
3
Q
Making insoluble salts by precipitation
A
- make salt from precipitation
- filter out salt precipitate
- rinse with water
- dry by dabbing paper towel
4
Q
Titration equipment
A
- volumetric pipette ( measures exaclty 25cm3 )
- buirrete
5
Q
Titration method
A
- use volumetric pipette to measure 25cm3 of unknown alkali
- add drops of phenolphthalein
- fill buirette with known acid and clamp above flask
- measure initial volume of known acid on buirette
- use buirette to add acid into conical flask
- close tap as soon as colour begins to change
- measure the final volume of acid on buirette
- calculate titre
6
Q
how to obtain a sample of pure dry hydrated copper sulphate from copper oxide
A
- measure 25cm of sulfuric acid
- warm the acid using a bunsen burner
- add in copper oxide and stir until it is in excess
- filter the mixture
- heat the filtrate
- until crystals begin to form
- filter to remove crystals
- dry crystals on paper towel
