Making polymers Flashcards
what is a hydrocarbon?
a compound of carbon and hydrogen atoms only.
what are alkenes?
alkenes are hydrocarbons that have single covalent bonds only.
what are double bonds?
Double bonds involve shared pairs of electrons.
what is propane? and why is it an alkane?
a hydrogen because it only has C and H atoms. It is an alkane because all the bonds are single covalent bonds.
What is bromine used to test for? and colour does it change from when its added to an alkene?
it is used to test for an alkene. when orange bromine water is added to an alkene it turns colourless (decolourisis)
What does bromine and alkene form?
a new compound by an additional reaction. A di-bromo compound forms which is colourless.
name a compound in the form of saturated and unsaturated
propane and propene
what does saturated mean?
only has single covalent bonds between carbon atons
what does unsaturated mean?
has at least one double bond between carbon atoms
what is addition polymerisation?
is the reaction of many monomers that have carbon to carbon double bonds to from a polymer that has single bonds
what are the conditions needed for polymerisation?
a high pressure and a catalyst
what does the high pressure and catalyst do to the monomer?
cause the double bond in the ethene monomer to break
what is a polymer?
a very big molecule. very long chain molecule. molecule made from many small molecules called monomers.
what is it called when lots and lots of monomers are joined to make a polymer?
addition polymerisation
what is the displayed formula of methane
