Making Insoluble Salts Flashcards
How do you make pure, dry sample of an insoluble salt?
Use a precipitation reaction
Pick two soluble salts and mix them together
Eg To make lead chloride, mix lead nitrate and sodium chloride
What is the method?
1) Add 1 spatula of lead nitrate to a test tube and add water to dissolve it
- Shake it throughly to ensure that it has dissolved
- Then, in a separate test tube, do the same with 1 spatula of sodium chloride
2) Tip the two solutions into a small breaker and stir to make sure it’s all mixed together
- The lead chloride should precipitate out
3) Put a folded piece of filter paper into a filter funnel and stick the funnel into a conical flask
4) Pour the contents of the breaker into the middle of the filter paper
5) Wash out the breaker with some deionised water and tip this into the filter paper - to make sure you get all the precipitate from the breaker
6) Rinse the contents of the filter paper with deionised water to make sure that all the soluble sodium nitrate has been washed away
7) Then just scrape the lead chloride into fresh filter aper and leave it dry in an oven
