Acids Flashcards
What is a acid?
Substance with a pH of less than 7
Form H+ ions in water
The higher the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, the more acidic it is - lower its pH it will be
What is a base?
Substance that reacts with an acid to produce salt and water
What is a alkali?
Base that is soluble in water and have a pH more than 7 and form OH- (hydroxide ions) in water
The higher the concentration of OH- ions in a solution, the higher the pH
What is a pH scale?
Used to show how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
What is the pH for most acids and Alkali and netural?
Acids - Below 7
Alkali - Above7
Neutral is 7
What colour is Litmus in Acidic, Neutral and Alkaline solutions?
Red - Acidic
Purple - Neutral
Blue - Alkaline
What colour is methyl orange in Acidic, Neutral and Alkaline solutions?
Red - Acidic
Yellow - Neutral and Alkaline
What colour is phenolphthalein in Acidic, Neutral and Alkaline solutions?
Colourless - Acidic and Neutral
Pink - Alkaline
What factor does hydrogen ion concentration in a solution increases by?
Factor of 10 and the pH of the solution decreases by 1
eg For example
An acid of pH 2 has 10 times more H+ ions in solution than an acid of pH 3.
An acid of pH 3 would thus have 10 x 10 = 100 times more H+ ions in solution than an acid of pH 5.
