Making Insoluble Salts Flashcards
what does how you make a salt depend on
whether its soluble or insoluble
what are the two ways a salt can form as when two solutions are mixed
- a precipitate
- or in solution
what salts form as a precipitate or in a solution
- insoluble salts form as a precipitate
- soluble salts form in solution
are common salts of sodium, potassium and ammonium soluble or not
they are soluble
are nitrates soluble or not
they are soluble
are common chlorides soluble or not
- they are soluble
- except silver and lead chloride
are common sulfates soluble or not
- they are soluble
- except lead, barium and calcium sulfate
are common carbonates and hydroxides soluble or not
- they are insoluble
- except sodium, potassium and ammonium ones
what do you use a precipitation reaction for
making a pure and dry sample of an insoluble salt
how do you make an insoluble salt
by picking two soluble salts and reacting them together to form an insoluble salt
what would you make when mixing lead nitrate and sodium chloride
lead nitrate + sodium chloride = lead chloride + sodium nitrate
what is the full method of making an insoluble salt
- add a spatula of both soluble substances into each test tube and add water to dissolve it
- tip two solutions into a small beaker and mix it
- the insoluble salt should precipitate out
- put filter paper into a funnel and into a conical flask
- pour contents of beaker into the funnel and wait for liquid to drip into flask
- swill put beaker with deionised water and tip into funnel
- rinse contents of filter paper with deionised water
- scrape insoluble salt onto fresh filter paper and leave to dry
why should you use deionised water during the experiment to make an insoluble salt
to make sure that there are no other ions about
why should you make sure that the contents dont go above the filter paper when pouring it into the funnel
so that some of the solid doesnt dribble down along the side
why should you swill out the beaker with water and tip into the filter paper
to make sure you get all the precipitate from the beaker
