Making Esters Flashcards

1
Q

How are esters made?

A

Esters are made in a condensation reaction.
An alcohol and a Carboxylic acid form an ester and a small molecule (usually water)
The alcohol loses its (H) and the carboxylic acid loses its (OH), which them come together to form water.

Q

What is condensation polymerisation?

A

Reaction where small molecules are joined together to make a long chain molecule plus a small molecule (eg water). It creates a condensation polymer repeating unit.
