Major Pathways in Cells (CH 10) Flashcards
Autotrophs
Some species, notably bacteria and plants, can grow and reproduce by utilizing inorganic sources of these essential elements
Photoautotrophs
Obtain most of their energy by photosynthesis and their main source of carbon is CO2.
This catergory includes photosynthetic bacteria, algae, and plants.
Chemoautotrophs
Obtain their energy by oxidizing inorganic molecules and utilizing CO2 as a carbon source.
Some bacterial species are chemoautotrophs but there are no eukaryotic examples.
Heterotrophs
Heterotrophs, such as animals, need an organic carbon source.
Photoheterotrophs
Photosynthetic organisms that require an organic compound as a carbon source.
Chemoheterotrophs
Non-photosynthetic organisms that require organic molecules as carbon sources.
