Major Functions Of Lymphatic System Flashcards
1
Q
Fluid balance
A
Amount of substances entering area of body must equal what comes out, lest edema should occur (lymphatic capillaries will act to collect the remaining fluid in form of lymph)
2
Q
Formation of lymph
A
- composed of mixture of water, ions, various proteins
- results of filtration of blood plasma and absorption of interstitial fluids
- gives means of transport of pathogens to lymph nodes to eliminate infection and can aid in productions of lymphocytes
3
Q
Lipid absorption and transport
A
- lacteals are lymphatic structures found within lining of small intestine
- lacteals absorb lipids and various other substances
- when lipids enter lacteals they’ll pass through lymphatic vessels until they reach veins
- lipid containing lymph is know as chyle and will appear white
4
Q
Immunity
A
- foreign bodies will be filtered out from lymph via lymph nodes and from boood via spleen
- lymphocytes produced with lymphatic system capable of targeting and destroying pathogens s, preventing infection
