Arteries Flashcards
Arteries are vessels that transport blood
Away from the heart towards capillaries.
Arteries are oxygen
Rich
Elastic arteries
- largest artery
- conduct blood from heart to more distant muscular arteries
- tunica media consists of large portion of elastic fibers and less smooth muscle
- stretch to accommodate blood being ejected from left ventricle and elastic fibers help rebound their original diameter, smoothing out pulsation blood flow
Muscular arteries
- smaller
- farther from heart
- tunica media proportional thicker consists of multiple layers of smooth muscle bound between distinct elastic laminate
- extra muscle and reduced elastic fibers of tunica media allow vasodilation and vasoconstriction in order to regular distribution of blood to specific body regions
Arterioles
- smallest class
- deliver blood to capillaries, where gas and nutrient exchange can occur
- always under some level of contraction (vasomotor tone) and regular by vasomotor center of brainstem
- lead to metarterioles from which capillaries arise
Vasodilation results in
Increase in diameter of lumen of vessel in order to allow for greater blood flow to specific regions
Vasodilation is accomplished by
Inhibiting and relaxing smooth muscle of tunica media
Vasoconstriction
Decrease diameter of lumen of vessel and is achieved by contracting smooth muscle of tunica media
Vasoconstriction of blood vessels lumen
Lessens blood flow to specific region downstream to vessel
Great of contraction can be modified leading to vasodilation and vasoconstriction of vessels and is greatly influenced by
Sympathetic nervous system
