Classifications of International Organisations
A
- open (universal, open for every state) vs. closed (geographically, certain criteria, economic aspects, colonial background, religions, economic system)
- supranational (stands above MS, delegated sovereignty, binding, perhaps creation of rights) vs. intergovernmental (no transfer of sovereignty to IO from MS, non-binding)
- political (broad goals, general objectives) vs. functional (narrowed scope)

Features of International Non-Governmental Organisations
A
- not established by states, but private actors
- established under national law
e.g. Greenpeace, ICRC, Nestle, drug cartels

Categories of international NGOs
A
- NGOs with explicit economic, social or political agendas (traditional NGOs)
- NGOs that try to avoid overly political roles
- private-sector economic organisations (engaged in large activities in a different state other than it is based)
- Terrorist and criminal organisations or networks
