Maintenance stage
Pre-contemplation stage
There is no intention to change within the next 6 months because they do not view their behaviour as a significant problem.
Contemplation stage
There may be considerations of making a change, however they do not actually initiate any behaviour change. They consider changing within the next 6 months.
Preparation stage
Formulating intentions and an action plan for change, making a commitment to change their behaviour within the next 30 days.
Action stage
Engaging in behaviour for less than 6 months.
Maintenance stage
When change has been successfully sustained without relapse for 6 months or more.
Strengths of the Transtheoretical model of behaviour change
- It allows for minor and significant setbacks from which an individual may recover from and re-engage with their change attempt.
- It considers individual differences, recognising that people are in different stages of readiness to make behaviour change.
Limitations of the Transtheoretical model of behaviour change
- Lack of research to justify the relevance of validity of time frames specified for different stages.
- Questions surrounding whether the stages are in the correct order and whether there are other stages that have been overlooked.
