Maintaining Balance# Flashcards
1
Q
How does the kidney help to maintain the balance?
A
Regulates the amount of water in the plasma
Maintains blood pressure and electrolyte balance using the angiotensin-aldosterone mechanism
Regulates the pH of the plasma
2
Q
State the stages in which the regulation of blood pressure and electrolytes occurs
A
- A decrease in blood pressure occurs
- Juxtaglomerular cells in kidney detect this
- Produces Renin
- Liver also produces angiotensinogen
- This Causes an increase in angiotensin 1
- Via lungs and increase of angiotensin 2 is also caused
- This causes a vasoconstriction of arterioles, which will help increase blood pressure until it returns to normal.
- Adrenal cortex causes an increase of aldosterone and then causes in kidneys, increased Na+ and water reabsorption and increased secretion of K+ and H+ into urine.
- Causes increase in blood volume
- Blood pressure increases until normal
