A
- One nation’s militarism is the others strong defence
- Germans were the first to declare war on a major power
- Russia was the first to mobilise it’s army, which drew the other countries into the war
- July 25th Russia had started to prepare for war
- July 30th Russia became first to put it’s weapons into motion
- Naval rivalry between German and Britain
- Britain began to fear that if Germany had the best army and navy, it could dominate the world

Alliances in WW1
A
- In world war I, there were two main alliances
- Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire) and the Triple Entente (France, Great Britain and Russia)
- Many countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Sweden , Netherlands and Spain remained neutral during the war
- Some were neutral at first, but later entered the war such as Bulgaria
- Many countries that decided to join the war was due to its own reasons to settle old debt with other countries such as taking back invasion of land
- Britain abandoned its ‘splendid isolation’ policy and began to build ententes

Imperialism in WW1
A
- Russia wanted to keep its influence on the Balkans, which drew it into the war
- Amount of land owned by France and Britain increased the rivalry with Germany as they had controlled over Africa and several colonies
- Germany wanted to enlarge their own empire/industry/status by controlling Morocco in North Africa, this led to rivalries between them and France
- Germany during WWI had the world’s best army and in 1898 it began to build a fleet to battle the British Navy
- The Berlin-Baghdad Railways was a threat towards Russia as it sure it as a threat to its position in the Balkans

Nationalism in WW1
A
- Serbia wanted to centralise their state and unite to drive out the Austria-Hungary out of the Balkans
- To protect their empire, the Austria-Hungarians took action and take control of not just Serbia but other Balkan nations
- Germany and Italy formally uniformed as countries in 1871
Nationalism was responsible for pushing countries to expand their influence in Europe
