What mahram relations are established when a woman breastfeeds a different child?
Child is mahram to fostermother, her offspring and her siblings, fosterfather, his offspring and his siblings.
Conditions for breastfeeding to form a mahram relationship?
IslamQA states 2 conditions: (1) 5 breastfeedings or more, and (2) before the 2 year period
What distinguishes one breastfeeding from another?
Ibn al-Qayyim said that a breastfeeding is when the infant latches onto the nipple and starts sucking, then lets go by his own choice without any other distraction. IslamQA elaborates, if the infant stops for whatever reason and does not return to the breast for a clear amount of time, that is one breastfeed complete. But if the infant returns immediately to the breast, then this short break is dismissed
When is the breastfeeding done?
ash-Shafi’i holds the view that breastfeeding establishes a mahram relationship if done within the 2 years
Can the validity of breastfeeding be annulled if the infant takes food too?
IslamQA states that the stronger opinion is that taking food isnt classified as weaning until the infant completely stops taking milk, so breastfeeding is valid even if infant takes food.
Who can breastfeed?
IslamQA says that its best for it just to be the mother, but if another woman is appointed, its disliked if she is a disbeliever/bad character or sick
What mahram relations are NOT established from breastfeeding?
IslamQA states that the offspring, siblings (and their children) and ancestors of the breastfed infant are completely unaffected in terms of mahram-relation formation.
How is breastfeeding proven?
islamQA states that the majority of scholars hold that one woman is not sufficient proof, But the stronger opinion is that it is sufficient, given that the woman is of good character and there are no reservations about her testimony
Hadith that encourages making sure who is a mahram via breastfeeding.
It was narrated from `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came into her house, and there was a man with her. His expression changed, as if he disliked that, but she said: He is my brother [through breastfeeding]. He said: “Consider who are your brothers through breastfeeding, for breastfeeding is only through hunger.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari, 5102) and Muslim, 1455)

narrated by al-Bukhaari (5105) from ‘Uqbah ibn al-Haarith (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I married a woman, then a black woman came to us and said: I breast-fed both of you. I went to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: I married So and so, daughter of So and so, and a black woman came to us and said to me: I breast-fed both of you, and she is lying. He turned away from me, so I came to him from the other side and said: She is lying. He said: “How could you keep her as your wife when that woman has said that she breast-fed you both? Leave her (i.e., divorce your wife).”
