Magnets Flashcards
What are bar magnets?
Permanent magnets
What is a permanent magnet?
Their magnetism is there all the time and cannot be turned on or off
What are the two poles on a magnet called?
North Pole and South Pole
Name some magnetic materials
- cobalt
- iron
- nickel
- aluminium
What is a domain?
A little group of atoms in a magnet
Why doesn’t a normal piece of iron act like a magnet?
The domains are magnetised in different directions
How can you make a magnet?
By stroking a piece of iron in the same direction or you could also leave it next to another magnet for a while
Why does heating a magnet remove its magnetism?
When you are heating the magnet you are giving the atoms energy so they will move around and will not be aligned anymore
Why should you not drop magnets on the floor?
When it hits the floor the vibrations let some of the atoms move around a little inside the metal
Examples of non-magnetic materials
- wood
- plastic
- paper
- copper
- steel
What does attract mean when we are talking about magnets?
When the North Pole attracts to the South Pole
