Getting Energy Flashcards
Why do we need joints in our skeleton?
So that we can bend and move
Which part of our skeleton moves so that we can breathe?
Ribs
Which part of our skeleton moves so that we can chew food?
Lower jaw
What is needed in the diet for strong bones and teeth?
Calcium
Name the process which causes gas to be given off glucose solution with yeast particles
Fermentation
What is the word equation for fermentation
glucose—->ethanol+CO2(+energy)
What happens to yeast cells when they are boiled?
They die
What effects does osteoarthritis have on the joint?
Give 2
- this could make the bones rub together
- they could be stiff and swell/inflame
Why do ligaments at the elbow need to stretch?
So that you can bend your arm
Why is it necessary that tendons hardly stretch at all when a muscle contacts?
It could pull off the bone
How do antagonistic muscles work?
As one muscle contracts, the other relaxes
How can your breathing change when you are doing exercise?
You will start to breathe heavier, and breathe much faster
What is the pattern that the muscles cells have to travel to release carbon dioxide from the body?
muscle cells—>bloodstream—>lungs—>windpipe—>nose
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose—>Lactic acid(+energy)
How does anaerobic respiration work?
When you are doing exercise, you will struggle to get oxygen so instead you only have glucose. This glucose creates energy but it also creates lactic acid. The blood attempts to remove the lactic acid from the muscle cells but when you use your muscles for a long time it builds up.
