Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What are the two types of magnetic pole?
North seeking and south seeking.
Like poles…
repel.
Opposite poles…
attract.
What is the difference between a permanent magnetic and an induced magnet?
A permanent magnet produces its own magnetic field and an induced magnet only becomes a magnet when placed in a magnetic field.
What is flux density?
The density of the field lines.
What is a solenoid?
The magnetic field around a coil of wire.
How is an electromagnet made?
When a wire is made into a coil and a current flows through it, a solenoid is created around the coil. An iron core is added into the coil which strengthens the field. This creates an electromagnet.
What is an example of an electromagnetic device?
An electric bell.
What is the motor effect?
When a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field it experiences a force called the motor effect.
What is the generator effect?
When conductors and magnetic fields interact, a potential difference can be induced. This is called the generator effect.
What is the generator effect used in?
Alternators and dynamos.
How is the generator effect used in alternators?
To generate an alternating current.
How is the generator effect used in dynamos?
To generate a direct current.
What does a basic transformer consist of?
A primary coil, a secondary coil, and a soft iron core.
