Forces Flashcards
What is scalar quantity?
A scalar quantity has only magnitude.
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity has magnitude and direction.
What is a contact force?
When the objects touch.
What is a non-contact force?
When the objects do not touch.
What is gravity?
A force of attraction between all masses.
What is mass?
Related to the amount of matter an object contains and is constant.
What is weight?
The force acting on an object due to gravity.
What is a resultant force?
When more than one force acts on an object, these forces can be seen as a single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting together.
What is work done?
When a force causes an object to move, work is done on the object.
What is elasticity?
When an object returns to its original shape after being deformed. The object has been elastically deformed.
What is limit of proportionality?
When an elastic object has been stretched beyond its limit of proportionality, the object doesn’t return to its original shape.
What is the spring constant?
This indicates how easy it is to stretch or compress a spring- the higher the spring constant, the stiffer the spring.
What is the moment of a force?
When a force causes an object to rotate about a pivot point, the turning effect is the moment.
What are levers and gears used for?
Transmitting the rotational effects of forces, magnifying either the size of the applied force or the distance the force moves over.
What is pressure caused by?
Particles colliding with a surface.
What is the atmosphere?
A thin layer of air around the Earth.
What is upthrust?
The upwards force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object.
What is speed?
A scalar quantity that is a measure of how fast an object is travelling.
What is velocity?
A vector quantity that is the speed of an object in a given direction.
What is inertia?
When objects stay in the same state of motion.
What is acceleration?
A measure of how quickly an object speeds up, slows down or changes direction.
What is terminal velocity?
The steady speed an object reaches when falling through a fluid.
What is stopping distance?
The distance it takes for a car to stop including thinking distance and braking distance.
