magnetism Flashcards
what is magnetism?
an invisible force that pushes or pulls magnetic material only
what is a magnetic field?
the area where magnetic forces attract
describe the poles on a magnet.
every magnet has two poles, the north and south. like poles repel and unlike poles attract.
what are the 3 magnetic metals?
iron cobalt and nickel but they only attract to magnets not to eachother
what are the uses of the magnetic metals?
they are used in turbines and other industrial products because of their high tolerance to heat
from which pole does the magnetic travel to?
NORTH TO SOUTH ALWAYS
what is a permanent magnet?
their magnetism is there all the time and cannot be turned on nor off
what is an induced magnet/electromagnet?
the magnetism can be turned on and off. this is by putting it in a magnetic field of a permanent magnet.
what is a domain?
group of spinning electrons. a tiny magnet within a material
how do we know which pole is north?
domains always point to the north pole
what is the motor effect?
when a current carrying wire is placed in a magnetic field, it will experience a magnetic force (provided the force is not parallel to the field)
what is fleming’s left hand rule?
tells us the direction of the current when we know the force and the magnetic field
we use FBI for each of the fingers in flemings rule, what do each of the letters mean and for what fingers are they for?
F: Force, thumb
B: Magnetic field, index
I: Current, middle
what is a soft magnetic material?
e.g. iron
can only temporarily be magnetised
what is a hard magnetic material?
e.g. steel
permanently magnetised
