forces and matter Flashcards
what is an elastic material?
apply a force to a spring and it changes shape. release the force and the spring will go back to its original shape. objects that act like this are called elastic
what is elastic deformation?
when an elastic project is out of shape temporarily
what is inelastic deformation?
when a plastic shape is permanently out of shape
what is hookes law?
hookes law is the relationship between force and extension
what is the spring constant?
different objects have different spring constants this can be worked out using the hookes law equation
what is the hookes law equation?
f = ke
f: force we apply
k: spring constant
e: extension
what is extension?
how much the spring has stretched from its original length.
new length - old length = extension
how does atmospheric pressure change with altitude?
the higher you go the lower the weight of the air above you therefore the lower the atmospheric pressure
how is pressure related to force and area?
pressure = pressure x depth/height x density
IN FLUIDS
how does the atmospheric pressure affect the pressure in the fluid?
when there is some pressure in the atmosphere, we add this to the fluid pressure and this would give us the total pressure of the fluid.
atmosphere pressure + fluid pressure (due to depth) = total pressure of the fluid
what is pressure measured in?
n/m2 or pascal
1 pascal = 1n/m2
what is the equation of pressure?
pressure (Pa) = force (N)
—————
surface area (m2)
how does pressure increase with depth and density in fluids?
in fluids, the further down the point is that we are measuring, the more pressure it has. this is due to the weight of the rest of the fluid above the point we are looking at.
what is upthrust?
the force of buoyancy and floating
when does an object float (using upthrust)?
an object floats when it is the same or less dense than the water
