Magnetism Flashcards
Magnetic materials or ferromagnetic materials
Iron nickel cobalt this materials are able to be magnetised their retainer magnetism for a long time
Domain theory
Atoms are arranged into small units called magnetic domains each domain acts as a small magnets unmagnetised ferromagnetic material is domains point in all directions randomly the net magnetic field zero however magnetised ferromagnetic material is placed in a magnetic field and the domains or align with Xbut the external field
Temporary magnets
Magnets the don’t retain the magnetism magnets that are easy to magnetise they are made of soft magnetic material the domains quickly swing in and out of magnetism and example is an electromagnet
Permanent magnets
Magnets that retained the magnetism and take a long time and I difficult to magnetise they are made of hard magnetic material and an example is a compass needle if you cut a magnets and a half you will get two magnets
Magnetism
A non-contact force
Alloy
A mixture mainly of metals that have been melted together an example is steel which is made up of iron and carbon
Magnetic field
A region in space and which are magnets or ferromagnetic material experiences and magnetic force of attraction or a repulsion magnetic field surround magnets
Poles
Regions of the aims of a bar magnet that have a high concentration of field lines areas where do magnetic force is strongest
Unlike poles…..
Attract
Like Poles……
repel
How do you magnetise a ferromagnetic material
You can magnetise the material with a strong current or by stroking a ferromagnetic material with a magnet
