Q

Why is the earth magnetic?

A

In the outer core are two liquid magnetic metals. They are iron and nickel. When they move and rotate they generate magnetic and electrical fields which give the earth its magnetism.

Q

How does the domain theory of magnetism work?

A

When the domains are in random directions, they get stroked by the magnet and the domains line up to form a weak magnet.

Q

How do you destroy a magnet?

A

Heat it up or drop it from a great height to suddenly move the particles into a random order.

Q

What causes the auroral display?

A

Electrical charges stream from the sun then get trapped in the earth’s magnetic field. They are then drawn to the atmosphere at the poles because of the earth’s magnetism. Next, the electrically charged particles hit molecules in the atmosphere and cause them to glow with light.
