Compounds And Mixtures Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a combination of substances whose composition is not fixed. Mixtures can be separated by physical means.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler. It is a building block chemical.
What is an atom?
Atoms are the building block particles of the universe. Each element is made up from a different atom.
What is a molecule?
A combination of atoms that are stuck together to form another substance.
Name eight things that could mean there is a reaction.
Flame Fizzing Temperature Change delta t Explosion disappear Volume Precipitate Colour change
Diatomic molecule means…
It goes around in pairs
What is a compound?
Two elements fused together to make a compound. This is a different substance with different properties.
Oxygen ends in…
…ate
Less oxygen ends in…
…ite
Why does ice get colder when salt is added?
The temp goes up above melting point and begins to melt. However, as it melts its temp goes down because energy is being used to break the bonds in the solid state of the ice.
What is solubility?
Solubility is the amount of solute that dissolves in 100 cm cubed of water ( or 1 litre of water )
What is a solvent?
The liquid that does the dissolving.
What is the solute?
The substance that dissolves.
What is the solution?
A mixture.
What is the word equation for solubility?
Solvent + solute —> solution.
