Magnetism Flashcards
What will happen to a magnet that is free to move?
It will line up ub a north-south direction
What are the poles of a magnet?
The places where the magnetic forces which it can exert are strongest
What is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet where it will exert a force on another magnet or on a magnetic material
How can plotting compasses be used?
To investigate the magnetic field around a bar magnet
Where do magnetic field lines point form to where?
From the north to the south pole
What does the magnetic field at any point show?
The direction of the forces that would be exerted on a north pole that was placed at that point in the field
Where are the magnetic field strongest?
When they are closest together
Where would a compass nwdle point?
In the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field
Where is the north and south pole found on earth?
North=southern hemisphere
South=northern hemisphere
What does a permanent magnet produce?
It’s own magnetic field and it always has a north and south pole
Is a permanent magnet attracted or repelled by another magnet?
Both
How can you investigate if a piece of metal is an electromagnet?
It will repel another magnet if flipped
When is an induced magnet magnetic?
When it is placed into a magnetic field
When can an induced magnet be attracted?
Only to a permanent magnet
What will happen to the forces of two permanent magnets when they are Brough close together?
They will increase
