John had a dispute with the Pope- John wanted to appoint leading churchmen instead of the Pope.

What were the 3 short term consequences of the Magna Carta?
- Magna Carta only changed the lives of freemen not peasants and villeins
- Barons only looking out for own desires- only included church and merchants because they needed support
- Civil War - Henry became king and Prince Louis sent back to France (who barrons wanted to ne king)
Why did a Civil War break out? When did it end?
Civil War broke out because John didn’t follow Magna Carta.
Civil War ended in 1216 (John died) and throne was passion onto 9 year old son Henry

- As years passed it became more significant as it applied to more people as they gained their freedom

King could call a Great Council of nobles and bishops to ask for advice but he didn’t have to follow it
