The government does not have supreme power and they are limited by the law, but they did have control of power over their subjects

The rule of law
A
That nobody can overpower the law and nobody can be above the law and the law governs the people

Individual rights
A
Indivuals have certain rights and those rights come from nature or god. These rights include life liberty and the right to own property

Shared power
A
Power that is shared between two or more people. The power makes nobody is in control and everybody has their own rights this power makes people not have complete power and complete power is prevented by a system called checks and balances
