2
Q

when does crystallization happen

A

when magma or lava cools, minerals solidify at different temperatures

crystallizing changes chemical composition as cooling progresses

e.g olivine that forms early in sequence can be mg rich, olivine forming later become fe rich

Q

what effects size of crystals

A

speed of magma cools

if cools quickly, finer crystals

if cools slowly, coarser crystals

solvent = the dissolving medium

solution = substance being dissolved

Q

what is a solid solution

A

mixture of 2 crystalline solids with similar crystal lattices

crystal structure of the solvent remains unchanged by addition of the crystalline solute

same way salt dissolves in water, but with metals

Copper and zinc dissolve in each other and harden to give solid solutions called brass

can only be chemicals, not mechanically be removed

Q

bowen’s reaction series

A

describes temperature which minerals crystallize when cooled or melt when heated, doesnt work for every igneous system

Q

crystal behaviour examples

A

crystal surrounds another, it crystallized later

early forming crystallise commonly euhedral

big and small crystals coexisting, larger came first
