What qualifies a person to be a magistrate
Have to be 18-74 years old
Live in or near the local area of the justice area where they serve
Commit to sitting at least 26 half days/ 18 whole days a year

Apply via direct gov website or by post

Local advisory committee creates a shortlist and check references

The interview panel consists of two magistrates and one other

1. Examines character 6 qualities
2. Will include trial and sentence exercises

Candidates reviewed by LAC to ensure balanced bench e.g age and occupation,ethnicity,gender

The committee submits its recommendations to the lord chief justice
What is step 7 of selection and appointment
The lord chief justice makes the appointment
