Magentism Lecture Flashcards
How does a Maglev Train work?
Magnetic levitation, forces of attraction and repulsion.
What are 5 types of magnets?
Bar, horseshoe, cylindrical, ring, circular.
What is a magnet?
An object that attracts certain metals, like iron. Has 2 poles.
What is magnetic force?
The force that a magnet exerts on certain materials (non-contact force). A magent can exert force over a distance because the magnet is surrounded by a magnetic field.
What is a ferromagnetic material?
Magnets that can be magnetized.
Ex. iron, nickel, cobalt
How can a ferromagentic material be magnetized?
By placing the material in ferromagnets or passing electricity.
What is a magnetic domain?
A region inside of a material where groups of magnets moments naturally align in the same direction.
What is a temporary magnet?
When a material acts as a magnet when it is in a strong magnetic field, but no longer stays magnetic when the field is removed.
What is a permanent magent?
A magnet that remains a magnet after being removed from a magnetic field. Some magnetic materials can be made permanent by placing them in a very strong magnetic field.
What is magentic potential energy?
Stored energy that is the result of interactions of magnetic poles in a magnetic field
What is magnetite?
A naturally occuring magnetic material also called lodestone.
What does the Earth do as a magnet?
Pushes space debris away from the Earth and protects Earth from the Sun’s energy field.
How is Earth a magnet?
Earth is magnet because of charged particles moving through the molten outer core as Earth spins on its axis.
Explain Earth’s magnetic field reversal.
Over the past millions of years, Earth’s magnetic fields have reversed several times. The evidence is rocks with magnetic lines.
