Electromagnetism Lecture Flashcards
Describe electric charge.
Positive and negative charges, like charges repel, opposite charges attract.
Ex. battery
What is an electric field?
The invisible region surrounding a charged object.
What is electric potential?
The stored energy due to interactions of charges in an electric field.
What is a neutral object?
An object with equal amounts of positive and negative charge.
What is induction?
Charging an object without touching it.
What is conduction?
The transfer of electrons between 2 conductors.
What is a insulator?
A material in which electrons can freely flow.
Ex. copper, silver, gold, sea water
What is a conductor?
A material in which electrons cannot flow.
Ex. rubber, glass, diamond, dry wood
What is electric current?
The movement of electrons measured in amperes.
What is direct current?
Current flowing in one direction.
What is alternating current?
Current that alternates direction.
What is resistance?
The opposition to the flow of electric charges in an electric current as it travels through matter.
What is voltage?
The electrical potential energy difference between 2 places on a circuit.
What is Ohm’s law?
States that the current passing through a conductor is proportional to the voltage over resistance.
I = V/R
What is electromagnetic induction?
The process of generating electric current with a magnetic field.
