Quest for the Spice Islands
Charles I of Spain placed Magellan in charge of 5 ships
He was ordered to find a new route to the Spice Islands and new lands for Spain
The Treaty of Tordesillas did not specify whether the islands belonged to Spain or portugal
Spain wanted the islands to develop trade in spices.
Magellan’s Journey
Left Spain in 1519.
With 5 ships.
Aimed to find a route west, due to the Treaty of Tordesillas.
Set sail across the Atlantic, entering the Pacific.
Claimed the Philippines in 1521.
Returned in 1522 yet with only one ship. The Victoria.
Only 18 of the 250 men returned.
Why was Magellan’s voyage important?
Established that the earth was round.
Opened up the Pacific, leading to the exploration of the Philippines and East Indies.
Philippines became part of the Spanish Empire.
Enabled Spain to dominate the World Trade.
Income increased to the Spanish Government.
How did Magellan die?
Died on the voyage.
Killed by natives in the Philippines after a hostile clash.
Elcano captained the Victoria, leading it home after Magellan was killed.
What difficulties did Magellan face?
Many ships lost across the journey, only returning with the Victoria.
Rough weather.
Magellan was killed in battle.
Mutinous crew - turned against the captain, tried to rebel, bad team work.
Unknown waters.
Illnesses and diseases, such as scurvy.
Limitations of Magellan’s voyage
Huge amounts of men were lost.
Journey was very long.
Magellan was killed.
Only one boat returned with 18 men.

put Magellan in charge of 5 ships, wasnt clear who the spice islands belonged to so they wanted to challenge this and find a route west accross the Atlantic.

Only 1 ship returned - the Victoria
led by Juan Elcano
18 sick men arrived back, after originally 270
Magellan’s route
Leaves Spain in september 1519
resupplies at Rio de Janiero
Magellan decides the right route, yet San Antonio’s crew disagree and sail back to Spain, 3 remaining ships enter what is jow the Straight of Magellan.
1520 hit by scurvy, disease and malnutrition, many deaths.
Land in the philippines, Magellan killed and Elcano takes over.
Reach cape verde islands in 1522 and return to Seville on the 8th September 1522
