Why did Columbus need a sponsor?
Voyages of exploration were not cheap.
Sponsors would put up money in return for a share of the profits made from the voyage.
ships were needed, and crew risking their lives.
What did Columbus want to do once he was sponsored?
He wanted to open up a new sea route to the East Indies.
Would allow many more trading opportunities.
A huge fortune would be gained.
Believed there was huge opportunities to make enormous amounts of money, from new islands and lands that weren’t yet discovered.
Why did Ferdinand and Isabella grant support in 1491?
If successful it would raise Spains international prestige.
