Why did Columbus need a sponsor?

A

Voyages of exploration were not cheap.
Sponsors would put up money in return for a share of the profits made from the voyage.

What did Columbus want to do once he was sponsored?

A

He wanted to open up a new sea route to the East Indies.
Would allow many more trading opportunities.
A huge fortune would be gained.
Believed there was huge opportunities to make enormous amounts of money, from new islands and lands that weren’t yet discovered.
